Koonowla is a dream come true for father and son, Nick and Alex George. A gracious estate pulsating with history. Picturesque vineyards, rolling hillsides, and a Clare Valley country greeting embedded in every corner. Family, friends and community are everything to us when it comes to enjoying our wines and our home-spun hospitality.
Welcome. Make yourself at home.
Koonowla is a celebration of historic endeavour spanning three centuries, reinvigorated with the arrival of the George family in 2019. Under Nick’s passionate guidance and Alex’s next-generational drive, a new chapter is written into the estate’s exciting narrative.
Yes we’re a vineyard, winery and cellar door, but there’s much we can offer as a delightful venue for special occasions – weddings, anniversaries, community functions, corporate lunches – the opportunities are endless.
And of course, our wines are the lifeblood of Koonowla, beginning with the finest fruit from our family vineyards stretching the length of the Clare Valley, from Armagh to Auburn through to expert winemaking in the hands of our great friend Con Moshos at Tapanappa. Every drop shines a light on our proud story.
Like many who visit the Clare Valley, Nick George fell in love with the region’s unspoiled beauty, its stirring Australian landscapes and magnificent vineyards.
Nick followed his dream in 2000 and bought a special plot of land in the renowned Armagh district, the source of some of Australia’s most prized shiraz.
His original idea, to produce rich, handsome reds without an extravagant price tag, remains true today. After 40 years in real estate and finance, building Ray White and Loan Market into South Australia’s largest real estate group, he now has turned his attention to developing the family’s viticultural holdings and creating a range of regionally distinguished Clare Valley wines.
With the re-awakening of Georges Family Winegrowers, Nick’s son Alex has returned home after studying overseas and working in digital real estate marketing to focus on the metro side of sales and operations for the family business. He will also apply his new-generation sales experience to both Georges and Koonowla brands to expand their reach and develop a progressive digital experience across a multi-faceted marketplace.
Con has established an enviable record with Clare Valley wines over many vintages working at Petaluma in collaboration with the esteemed Brian Croser. He now continues his association with the region in his role as winemaker for Georges Family Winegrowers, with all winemaking based at Tapanappa Winery.
